Very dry air and board
- Creases crack more readily — Dry board is stiffer and less forgiving at a fold.
- Grain direction becomes critical — A fold across the grain is far more likely to crack in dry conditions.
- Static builds up — Flat cartons cling, which slows hand feeding on a line.
- Two-piece lids tighten — The inverse of humid storage; a lid that was correct can become stiff.
- Labels are largely unaffected — Film facestocks are indifferent to low humidity.
Practical specifications
- Open formed trays over sealed blisters — Unless enclosure is genuinely required.
- Grain direction specified — So folds run with the grain rather than across it.
- Slightly looser two-piece lid fit — Where packaging is stored and used in dry conditions.
- Rigid construction for hinges — A wrapped hinge tolerates dry flexing better than a creased one.
