Why 5ml is the easiest size to get right
A typical 5ml vial is somewhere around 22 mm across and 40 mm tall, which gives a base wide enough that the vial resists tipping even before the insert does its job. The extra diameter also means a die-cut paperboard hole grips a useful amount of the vial circumference, so the cheapest insert option performs well.
The result is that 5ml packs rarely need over-engineering. Most projects are served by a folding carton, a die-cut insert and good printing — with foam or trays reserved for presentation-led products.
- Stable footprint — The wider base reduces tipping load on the insert.
- Useful panel area — Enough room for a product name, a barcode, batch fields and storage text without crowding.

Who buys 5ml packaging
- Research suppliers — High-volume single-vial cartons where print cost per unit is the deciding factor.
- Compounding and clinic supply — Cartons with clear space for pharmacy-applied labels.
- Private-label brands — Ten-count retail boxes with a strong front panel and a window.
- Distributors — Plain or lightly printed cartons that are labelled downstream.

Sizes, counts and layouts
Because 5ml vials tile so well, count changes the carton footprint predictably. These are the layouts we quote most often.
- Single vial — Commonly around 30 × 30 × 55 mm internal.
- Two vials — Commonly around 55 × 30 × 55 mm internal.
- Five vials, single row — Commonly around 125 × 30 × 55 mm internal.
- Ten vials, two rows of five — Commonly around 125 × 60 × 55 mm internal.
- Ten vials, 5 × 2 tray — A moulded or paperboard tray inside a two-piece box for retail display.

Material choices and where the money goes
At 5ml the honest advice is usually to spend on print quality rather than on substrate. SBS paperboard with a good lamination looks better on shelf than a heavier board with average printing.
- SBS paperboard — The default. Clean white surface, sharp print, adequate stiffness up to ten vials.
- Kraft paperboard — For brands that want an unbleached look. Best with one- or two-colour artwork.
- Rigid chipboard — Where the box is a keepsake or a display item rather than a transit carton.
- Corrugated board — Only for outer cases and multi-unit shippers, not for the primary carton.
- Recyclable paper-based stock — Available across all of the above where the whole pack must stay in a paper stream.
Inserts: how much protection is actually needed
This is the decision that most affects unit cost on a 5ml project, and it is worth making deliberately rather than by default.
- Die-cut paperboard platform — Sufficient for the large majority of 5ml packs that travel inside an outer case. Cheapest and fully recyclable.
- Folded partitions — For multi-count boxes, giving each vial its own cell so glass never touches glass.
- EVA foam — For packs posted individually, or where a premium unboxing is part of the proposition.
- Moulded tray — For window boxes and display packs where the vials need to sit at a consistent height and angle.

Printing a 5ml carton
A 5ml panel is large enough to carry a real design, which is why this is the size where print specification pays off most visibly.
- CMYK process — Full-colour artwork with photographic or gradient backgrounds.
- PMS spot colour — Essential if the carton sits next to other products in the same brand family.
- One- and two-colour — Keeps cost down on high-volume research and distributor cartons.
- Inside printing — A printed inner panel adds perceived value at modest cost on retail packs.
Finishing options
- Matte lamination — The most common choice; understated and fingerprint-resistant.
- Gloss lamination — Higher colour saturation, better for image-led artwork.
- Soft-touch coating — A tactile upgrade that customers notice immediately.
- Spot UV — Gloss detail over a matte base; effective on logos and molecular graphics.
- Foil stamping — Metallic or coloured foil on the logo or a rule.
- Embossing and debossing — Adds a physical dimension to the front panel.
- Aqueous coating — Light protection without a plastic laminate film.

Structural options
- Straight tuck end — The workhorse. Cheapest per unit and ships flat.
- Reverse tuck end — Marginally easier to open one-handed.
- Auto-lock bottom — Worth considering for ten-count boxes, where the loaded weight is higher.

- Two-piece and rigid — For presentation-led sets where the box is retained.

- 5. Production and delivery — Printed, cut, glued, counted and shipped flat.
Artwork guidance
- Leave a clear, uncoated or matte area if a pharmacy or lab will apply its own label over the carton.
- Keep barcodes on a flat panel, away from creases, at a magnification the symbology supports.
- Allow 3 mm bleed and keep critical content 4 mm inside the trim.
- Supply a print-ready PDF with linked images at 300 dpi and every font outlined.
Quality control
- Colour is checked against the approved proof or PMS reference throughout the run.
- Fit is verified using a sample vial before full production is released.
- Registration between print and die-cut is monitored, which matters most on window cartons.
- Glue seams are pull-tested.
- Cartons are counted and visually inspected at packing.

5ml Peptide Vial Boxes: questions we are asked
Is a die-cut paperboard insert really enough for a 5ml vial?
For a pack that travels inside an outer shipping case, yes, in most situations. The wider 5ml base gives a paperboard hole plenty of grip. Foam becomes the better answer when the individual carton is posted on its own or when several loose vials share one cavity.
How many 5ml vials can go in a single carton before it needs a stronger structure?
Around ten is where we usually recommend moving from a plain tuck carton to an auto-lock bottom or a two-piece box, because the loaded weight starts to work on the glued seams.
Can you leave a plain panel for a label we apply later?
Yes, and it is worth specifying up front. A gloss laminate can reject some label adhesives, so if a label is going onto the carton we will suggest a matte or uncoated area in that position.
Do you print barcodes, or do we supply them?
You supply the symbol in your artwork and we print it. We will flag it at proofing if the size or contrast looks likely to cause scan problems, but verifying that the code is correct and registered to you is your responsibility.
Can the same carton design be used for 5ml and 10ml vials?
Rarely without change. A 10ml vial is both wider and taller, so both the footprint and the height need to grow. The artwork can usually be adapted, but the die line will be new.
What is the most cost-effective 5ml specification?
An SBS straight tuck end carton, one- or two-colour printing, matte lamination and a die-cut paperboard insert. That combination covers the majority of high-volume research and distributor work.
Do you offer window cartons at this size?
Yes. A 5ml carton has enough panel area that a window can sit alongside your copy rather than replacing it, which is why windows work better here than on smaller sizes.
Can I order a small trial run first?
Yes. Low minimum orders are available so you can test a design before committing to volume. The minimum depends on the structure and finishing you choose.
Will you tell me if my design has a production problem?
Yes. Preflight checks cover bleed, resolution, colour space, fold clearance and registration risk. What we do not do is assess whether your content meets any regulatory requirement.
Do you supply the peptide or the filled vial?
No. We produce empty cartons, inserts and labels. Nothing we ship contains a peptide, a medication or any vial contents.
