The label real-estate problem

On a small carton, the content competes for space. Brand elements, product identification, batch and expiry fields, a barcode and storage text all want the same front and side panels — and then a pharmacy or clinic often needs to apply a further label on top.

The practical answer is to plan the dispensing label position into the layout from the start, rather than discovering afterwards that it covers the barcode. We treat that clear area as a design element with defined dimensions.

• Reserved label zone — A defined area sized to the dispensing label your customers actually use.
• Matte or uncoated finish in that zone — Gloss laminate can reject some label adhesives; a matte area holds them reliably.
• Barcode placement — Positioned where an applied label will not cover it, and on a flat panel away from creases.
• Batch and expiry fields — Printed as blank fields for overprinting, or left for a variable-data label.

Communicating storage on the pack

Products in this category are frequently temperature-sensitive, and the carton is often where storage information is communicated. We print what you specify; we do not determine what your product requires.

• Printed storage text — Content you author and approve, positioned where it will be read before the pack is opened.
• Symbol space — Layout allowance for any symbols you determine are required.
• Contrast for legibility — Storage text set in solid colour on a light ground rather than reversed out of an image.
• Outer carton markings — Handling and orientation markings on the transit shipper rather than the retail carton.

Tamper-evident options

• Seal labels — Applied across the carton opening; destroyed when the flap is lifted.
• Perforated tear strip — A die-cut opening line that cannot be reclosed invisibly.
• Shrink band — A full-pack sleeve applied at your facility.
• Glued end flap — A carton sealed shut in production, opened by tearing.

Whether tamper evidence is required for your product and market, and which form satisfies that requirement, is a determination for you and your regulatory advisers.

• SBS paperboard — The standard for this format. Bright white, prints small type cleanly, folds crisply.
• Straight tuck end — Keeps the front panel free of creases, which matters when panel space is tight.
• Auto-lock bottom — For multi-vial trade cases where loaded weight is higher.
• Die-cut paperboard insert — Holds the vial upright; recyclable with the carton.
• Recyclable paper-based stock — Available with aqueous coating instead of plastic lamination.

Printing and finishing

• CMYK process — Full-colour artwork where the pack is brand-facing.
• PMS spot colour — For consistent brand colour across repeat production.
• Two-colour — A common, economical specification for clinical layouts.
• Matte lamination — Reduces glare on small type and accepts applied labels reliably.
• Spot UV — Used sparingly on a logo where the pack is retail-facing.

Matching vial labels

A carton this size is usually specified alongside the vial label, because the two are seen together and the label carries most of the identifying information.

• Small-format label sizing — A short vial gives a narrow label band; the layout has to be planned rather than scaled down.

Artwork responsibility
