Why 3ml sits awkwardly between two sizes
A common 3ml vial runs close to 16 mm across the body with a height near 45 mm, against roughly 35 mm for a 2ml in the same family. Ten millimetres does not sound like much, but in a carton it is the difference between a vial sitting inside the insert and a vial sitting on top of it.
The other complication is supplier drift. Two vials both sold as 3ml can differ in shoulder profile, neck length and cap diameter. Cavities cut to one supplier's shoulder can grip the next supplier's vial too high, which puts load on the crimp instead of the glass body.
- Height, not width, is the variable — Plan headspace from the top of the cap and leave a small clearance so the lid never presses on the seal.
- Shoulder profile matters — A gently sloped shoulder needs a slightly larger cavity opening than a square-shouldered vial of the same diameter.
- Cap diameter drives the opening — On a die-cut paperboard insert, the vial has to pass cap-first through the hole, so the hole is sized to the cap.

3ml tends to appear where a slightly larger reconstituted volume is wanted but the pack still has to feel compact.

- Aesthetic and wellness brands — Six- and ten-count presentation boxes where the row of vials is the visual.
- Contract fillers — A single carton design run across several customers, differentiated only by the printed label.

Sizes and layout options
Because 3ml vials are taller than they are wide, the count you choose changes the carton proportion more than it does at 2ml. A row of six 3ml vials makes a long, shallow box; two rows of three makes a squarer one that ships better.
- Single vial — Commonly around 25 × 25 × 62 mm internal for a tuck carton with a paperboard insert.
- Two vials, side by side — Commonly around 45 × 25 × 62 mm internal.
- Six vials, single row — Commonly around 115 × 25 × 62 mm internal — elegant, but a long box to post.
- Six vials, two rows of three — Commonly around 60 × 50 × 62 mm internal, and noticeably cheaper to ship.
- Dual-fit insert — One cavity diameter, two cavity depths, letting a 2ml and a 3ml vial both seat correctly.
Choosing a material for a mid-height carton
At 45 mm tall the vial column starts to act as a lever, so panel stiffness matters more than at 2ml — particularly for multi-count boxes where the long panels are unsupported.
- SBS paperboard — Strong enough for counts up to about six vials, with a print surface that handles fine type and gradients.
- Rigid chipboard — The right answer when the box is the presentation and you want the walls to stay perfectly square.
- Kraft paperboard — Suits a stripped-back look; combine with one-colour printing rather than fighting the board tone.
- Recyclable paper-based stock — Where the whole pack needs to go into a paper recycling stream, paired with a paperboard insert rather than foam.

Insert strategies for 3ml
The taller vial gives an insert more to hold on to, which opens up options that are marginal at 2ml.
- Full-depth foam block — A milled cavity that surrounds most of the vial body. The most secure option and the best-looking when the box is opened.
- Die-cut platform — A raised paperboard deck with a punched hole. Light, recyclable and fine for boxes travelling inside an outer case.
- Twin-wall partitions — Folded paperboard cells for multi-count boxes; each vial sits in its own compartment with no shared walls.
- Moulded tray — Ideal where vials must be visible through a window or presented at a consistent angle.

Print options
- CMYK process — For photographic backgrounds, gradients and molecular graphics.
- PMS spot colour — Holds a brand colour steady across reprints — worth it if the carton sits beside others in a range.
- Two-colour — A spot brand colour plus black covers most clinical layouts at lower cost than full process.
- Inside printing — Works well on a 3ml box because the inner lid is visible when the vials are lifted out.
Finishing options
- Matte lamination — A calm, clinical surface that resists fingerprints.
- Soft-touch coating — Adds perceived value on presentation boxes; pairs well with foil.
- Spot UV — Use on a logo or a single graphic device over a matte base for contrast.
- Foil stamping — Effective on the lid of a two-piece or rigid box in gold, silver or a coloured foil.
- Embossing and debossing — Best on rigid board, where there is enough thickness to hold the impression cleanly.
- Aqueous coating — A light protective seal where lamination is not wanted for recyclability reasons.

- 3. Die line and proof — Artwork is laid onto our flat die line and returned as a digital proof.
- 4. Fit sample — A physical sample is made and the real vial is seated in it.
- 5. Production — The approved job is printed, die-cut, glued and packed flat.
Artwork notes specific to this size
- Long single-row cartons have a very shallow front panel — check that your logo lock-up still works at that proportion.
- If the box has a tray, remember the tray flange hides a few millimetres of the base panel.
- Place batch and lot fields where they will not be obscured by a tuck flap.
- Supply print-ready PDF, fonts outlined, 300 dpi images, 3 mm bleed.

- Approved proof and approved physical sample are both used as references during the run.
- Cavity depth is checked on multi-depth inserts so both vial heights seat correctly.
- Partition cells are spot-checked for square assembly.
- Colour is monitored against the signed proof or PMS reference.
- Finished cartons are counted and inspected before packing.

3ml Peptide Vial Boxes: questions we are asked
Can I use my existing 2ml carton for 3ml vials?
Only if the carton has enough internal height and the insert can be re-cut. The vial usually fits the footprint but stands taller than the insert was designed for, which stops the lid closing flat. Send us the existing carton and the new vial and we will tell you whether the outer can be kept.
What is a dual-depth insert?
One insert with cavities milled or cut to two different depths, so a shorter vial sits lower and a taller vial sits higher, and both finish level at the top. It is a practical answer when a brand runs two fill volumes through the same outer carton.
Six vials in a row or two rows of three?
Two rows of three is almost always cheaper to ship and less likely to be damaged, because the box is stiffer across its short axis. A single row looks better on opening. We quote both so the difference is visible before you commit.
Do 3ml vials need foam, or is paperboard enough?
Paperboard is enough for boxes that travel inside an outer shipping case. Foam becomes worthwhile when the box is posted on its own, when it contains several vials that could knock together, or when opening the box is part of the customer experience.
Can the box hold a vial and a syringe or diluent ampoule together?
Yes. The insert simply gains a second cavity profile. Mixed-component layouts are common and are covered in more depth on our kit box pages.
Will you check my label copy is correct?
No. We reproduce the artwork you approve. Deciding what must appear on the pack — warnings, statements, symbols, identifiers — is your responsibility and should be reviewed by someone qualified for your market.
How accurate does my vial measurement need to be?
To a tenth of a millimetre on the body diameter and cap diameter if you are measuring with callipers. If you only have a ruler, send us a vial instead — the cost of postage is far lower than the cost of a mis-cut insert.
Can the inner lid be printed?
Yes, and on a 3ml presentation box it is one of the better places to spend budget, because the inner lid is the first thing the customer sees when the box opens.
Is a window a good idea at this size?
It works well on multi-count 3ml boxes, where a row of vials behind a film patch is genuinely attractive. On a single-vial carton the window tends to dominate the panel and leaves little room for copy.
