Custom Tuck End Peptide Boxes

A tuck end carton is a single piece of board, printed flat, die-cut, folded and glued along one seam. It arrives collapsed, snaps open into a rectangle, and closes with flaps tucked into each end. That is the entire mechanism, and it is why this is the cheapest structure we make.

It is also the most misunderstood. The differences between straight tuck, reverse tuck and auto-lock affect assembly speed, load capacity and how the box behaves when a customer opens it — and those differences are worth understanding before you commit a print run.

Straight tuck, reverse tuck, auto-lock

These three variants account for almost every folding carton in vial packaging, and they are not interchangeable.

  • Straight tuck end (STE)Both flaps hinge from the same panel — usually the back. The front panel stays uninterrupted, which is why this is the choice when the front is the display face.
  • Reverse tuck end (RTE)Flaps hinge from opposite panels. Slightly cheaper because it nests more efficiently on the sheet, and easier to open one-handed, but a crease line crosses the front panel.
  • Auto-lock bottom (crash-lock)The bottom is pre-glued and locks itself as the carton is opened. Faster to assemble and far stronger under load — the right choice for multi-vial packs.

For a single vial, straight tuck is almost always the answer. Once you are holding four or more filled vials, an auto-lock bottom stops being an upgrade and starts being a requirement.

What a tuck end carton is good at

  • CostOne board, one pass, one glue seam. Nothing else comes close per unit.
  • Flat shipping and storageA pallet of flat cartons holds many times what the same pallet holds assembled.
  • Print areaSix clean panels, all flat, all printable inside and out.
  • Hand assemblyNo tools, no training, a few seconds per carton.
  • Die-cut featuresWindows, hang holes, tear strips and thumb notches are all straightforward.

Where a tuck end carton struggles

Being honest about the limits saves a reprint later.

  • Heavy contents on a tuck bottomA plain tucked bottom flap will eventually give way under repeated handling. Move to auto-lock.
  • Repeated openingTuck flaps soften with use. If the box is opened daily, it will not look good by the end.
  • Perceived valueA folding carton reads as functional, not luxurious, however well it is printed.
  • Empty box collapseOnce the contents are out, the carton loses shape, unlike a rigid build.

Sizing and board specification

  • Single vial cartonsFrom roughly 25 × 25 × 55 mm internal upward, depending on vial size.
  • Multi-vial cartonsSized to the insert footprint plus a small clearance for loading.
  • Board caliperSpecified to panel size and content weight; a taller carton needs more caliper than a short one of the same footprint.
  • Glue seam positionPlaced on a rear vertical edge so it never crosses printed detail on the display face.

Materials

  • SBS paperboardThe standard. Clay-coated white, folds cleanly, holds fine print detail.
  • Kraft paperboardUnbleached brown board. Folds well, but print contrast is limited to bolder artwork.
  • Recyclable paper-based stockWhere the whole carton must stay in a paper recycling stream, paired with an aqueous coating instead of laminate.
  • E-flute corrugatedFor larger cartons where a folding board would be too flexible; still tuck-end in principle.

Inserts inside a tuck end carton

  • Die-cut paperboard platformThe natural partner — same material family, ships flat alongside the carton.
  • Folded partitionsFor multi-vial cartons; each vial gets its own cell.
  • EVA foamPossible, though it partly defeats the flat-shipping advantage of a folding carton.
  • Moulded trayUsed where the carton has a window and the vials must sit at a set height.

For a carton that ships flat, a die-cut cardboard insert keeps the whole pack in one material and one shipment.

Printing a folding carton

  • CMYK processFull-colour artwork across all six panels.
  • PMS spot colourFor brand-critical solids that must match across repeat runs.
  • One- and two-colourWhere unit cost matters most — common on research and distributor cartons.
  • Inside printingA second pass on the reverse of the board; visible when the flaps open.

Finishing

  • Matte laminationThe most common. Adds scuff resistance and a calm surface.
  • Gloss laminationHigher colour saturation for image-led artwork.
  • Aqueous coatingA lighter seal that keeps the carton in a paper recycling stream.
  • Spot UVGloss detail over matte; works well on a logo or a molecular graphic.
  • Foil stampingPossible on folding board, though the effect is flatter than on rigid board.
  • Emboss and debossShallow effects only — folding board cannot hold a deep impression.

Die-cut features worth considering

Artwork guidance

  • Never redraw the die line — use the file we supply, at 100%.
  • Keep critical content 4 mm inside every fold and trim edge.
  • Remember the glue seam overlaps the rear panel; artwork there will be partly hidden.
  • Extend background colour 3 mm beyond every trim edge, including into the flaps.
  • Supply print-ready PDF with outlined fonts and 300 dpi linked images.

Quality control

  • Cartons are erected from the run and checked for square.
  • Glue seams are pull-tested.
  • Auto-lock bottoms are loaded and checked on sample cartons.
  • Print-to-die registration is verified, which matters most on window cartons.
  • Colour is monitored against the approved proof or PMS reference.

Delivery

  • Cartons arrive flat, banded in counted bundles inside corrugated outer cases.
  • Inserts and partitions arrive flat in the same shipment.

Tuck End Peptide Boxes: questions we are asked

What is the difference between straight tuck and reverse tuck?

On a straight tuck, both closing flaps hinge from the same panel, so the front face has no crease across it. On a reverse tuck they hinge from opposite panels, which nests better on the printing sheet and costs marginally less but puts a crease on the front. If the front panel is your display face, choose straight tuck.

When do I need an auto-lock bottom?

Once the carton holds enough weight that a tucked bottom flap could pop open — in practice, from about four filled 5ml vials upward, or any 10ml multi-pack. It also speeds up hand assembly noticeably.

Do tuck end cartons come assembled?

No. They arrive flat and are erected by you or your co-packer. That is one of the main reasons they are cheap to buy and cheap to ship.

Can a tuck end carton be tamper-evident?

It can carry tamper-evident features — a perforated tear strip, a seal label across the flap, or a shrink band. Whether tamper evidence is needed for your product is your decision.

How strong is a folding carton compared with a rigid box?

Much weaker in compression and much weaker once empty. For protecting a vial that is held by an insert inside an outer shipping case, that difference rarely matters. For a box that is handled repeatedly or presented as a premium item, it matters a lot.

Can I print on the inside of the carton?

Yes. Inside printing is a second pass on the reverse of the sheet before die-cutting. It is visible when the flaps are opened and is a low-cost way to add information or brand detail.

Will the glue seam show?

The seam sits on a rear vertical edge and overlaps the back panel by a few millimetres. It is visible if you look for it, but it is positioned so it never crosses front-panel artwork.

Can the carton hold a vial without an insert?

It can hold it, but not still. Without an insert the vial slides and rotates, which is how glass gets chipped and labels get scuffed. We would not recommend shipping a vial in a bare carton.

What is the cheapest possible specification?

SBS board, one-colour printing, no lamination, straight tuck end, die-cut paperboard insert. That is the floor, and it still produces a perfectly respectable carton.

Do you supply vials or fill the cartons?

No. We produce empty cartons and inserts. Erecting, filling and sealing happen at your end.
