Long components change the whole carton
A pen or a prefilled syringe is typically three to four times longer than it is wide. That single fact drives everything: the carton becomes long and narrow, the panels become slender, and the component needs supporting along its length rather than gripped at one point.
It also changes how the pack behaves in a drop. A long component pivots about whatever is holding it, so a single central cavity concentrates all the force at one point. Support at two positions along the length spreads it.
- Two-point support — Cradles at both ends rather than one cavity in the middle.
- Plunger and flange clearance — A syringe flange is wider than the barrel and needs its own relief.
- Needle shield allowance — The cap or shield is often the widest point and sets the channel width.
- Panel proportion — A long narrow front panel needs a different artwork lock-up from a square one.
Multi-component and mixed-format packs
Many packs in this category hold more than one thing, and the components are not alike.
- Multiple pens — Two, four or six pens side by side in a formed or folded tray.
- Pen plus needle tips — A separate compartment for a strip or box of tips.
- Vial plus syringe — A round cavity and a long channel in the same insert.
- Pen plus leaflet — A leaflet compartment beneath the tray rather than beside it.
- Alcohol swabs or wipes — A shallow recess so they do not sit under the pen and lift it.

Insert options for long components
- Formed tray with channels — The most consistent option. Every pen sits at the same height and angle.
- Foam block with milled channels — Best where the pack is posted on its own; the foam absorbs impact along the length.
- Folded paperboard cradle — Two folded supports holding the component at each end. Recyclable and low cost.
- Corrugated channel insert — For multi-pen trade packs where cost matters more than appearance.

Carton structures
- Straight tuck end — For single-component cartons; keeps the long front panel uninterrupted.
- Auto-lock bottom — For multi-pen cartons, where the loaded weight is concentrated.
- Two-piece lid and base — A presentation format for multi-pen packs; loads easily on a line.
- Window carton — Lets the component and its label be checked without opening.
- Sleeve and tray — A drawer holding a pen tray, which reveals the components progressively.
Sizes
- Single pen — Commonly around 30 × 30 × 165 mm internal, set by the pen length plus cradle clearance.
- Two pens side by side — Commonly around 55 × 30 × 165 mm internal.
- Four pens in a tray — Commonly around 105 × 40 × 165 mm internal.
- Vial plus syringe — Commonly around 40 × 30 × 120 mm internal.
- With a leaflet compartment — Add roughly 5–10 mm on the shallow axis.
Materials
- SBS paperboard — The standard, at a caliper chosen for the long panel span.
- Heavier caliper for long panels — A tall narrow carton flexes more than a compact one; caliper compensates.
- Rigid chipboard — For multi-pen presentation packs.
- E-flute corrugated — For multi-pen trade cases.
- Recyclable paper-based stock — Available throughout when paired with a paperboard cradle.
Printing and label areas
- CMYK and PMS — Full-colour or spot-colour artwork; spot is advisable on solid brand backgrounds.
- Long-panel layout — A tall narrow panel usually needs a vertical lock-up rather than a horizontal one.
- Reserved label area — Kept matte or uncoated where a dispensing label will be applied.
- Barcode placement — On a flat panel away from creases and away from any applied label.
- Inside printing — Available; useful on two-piece and sleeve structures.
Tamper-evident options
- Seal labels across both ends — A long carton has two openings, so both usually need sealing.
- Perforated tear strip — A single opening line running across one end.
- Glued end flap — Sealed in production and opened by tearing.
- Shrink band — Applied at your facility over the assembled carton.

- 1. Send the actual component — Pen and syringe geometry varies more than vial geometry. A specification sheet is not enough.
- 2. Confirm what else shares the pack — Tips, swabs, leaflets — all of them affect the carton size.
- 3. Structure and insert — Specified against component length, count and how the pack travels.
- 4. Die line, proof, loaded sample — Loaded with your actual components, so the cradle positions can be verified.
- 5. Production — Printed, cut, glued, with trays or cradles supplied to match.
Artwork responsibility
- We print artwork you supply and approve; we do not author it.
- We do not review packaging content for regulatory compliance or required statements.
- Our preflight covers production issues only — bleed, resolution, colour, fold clearance, registration.
- Responsibility for what appears on the pack rests entirely with you.

Quality control
- Cradle and channel positions are verified with the actual component seated.
- Long cartons are erected and checked for panel bow.
- Loaded samples are inverted to confirm the component does not slide lengthwise.
- Print-to-die registration is checked, particularly on window cartons.
- Counts and finish are inspected before packing.

Do you sell tirzepatide or supply the pens?
No. We make packaging. Every order we ship contains empty cartons, trays, inserts or labels and nothing else. Pens, syringes, vials and their contents are sourced entirely by you.
Why does a pen need a different carton from a vial?
Because it is long and thin rather than short and round. A long component pivots about a single support point, so it needs cradling at two positions along its length. The carton proportion changes completely as a result.
Can one carton hold both a pen and a vial format?
Rarely well. The lengths are too different, so a carton sized for the pen leaves the vial floating. Two cartons sharing a design language is usually the better answer.
Why do you need the actual pen rather than a drawing?
Because pen and syringe geometry varies considerably between manufacturers — cap diameter, flange width, plunger protrusion. Those details set the channel dimensions and are frequently missing or wrong on specification sheets.

Will this packaging make my product compliant?

Yes. A shallow recess beside or beneath the pen channel is straightforward — the important thing is that accessories cannot slide under the pen and lift it out of its cradle.
Do long cartons need heavier board?
Usually, yes. A tall narrow panel bows more than a compact one, so caliper is increased to compensate. We specify it against the actual carton proportions.
Can the pack have a window?
Yes, and it works well on pen packs because a formed tray holds every component level behind the film. We keep the window away from the corners, which take the load.
