What changes when the vial gets bigger
Common 10ml vials sit near 24 mm across the body and around 45–50 mm tall, with a 20 mm crimp finish. The diameter increase over a 5ml vial is modest; the mass increase is not. Once filled, the vial becomes heavy enough that the packaging has to be designed for impact, not just for tidiness.
Three things follow from that. The cavity needs to be deeper so the vial is supported over more of its height. The board needs more caliper so the walls do not deflect. And the corners — where crush damage always starts — need either a heavier structure or an outer that absorbs the load.
- Deeper cavity walls — Support over at least half the vial height, rather than gripping only at the shoulder.
- Higher board caliper — Specified per count; a ten-count 10ml box is a genuinely heavy pack.
- Corner and edge support — Auto-lock bottoms, two-piece construction or a corrugated outer, depending on how the pack travels.
- Headspace over the cap — Enough clearance that a lid impact is absorbed by board rather than by the crimp seal.
Where 10ml packaging is used
- Multi-dose research vials — Single-vial cartons with substantial printed information panels.
- Bulk and bacteriostatic diluent supply — Ten- and twelve-count cases; see bacteriostatic water packaging boxes for that specific format.
- Clinic and compounding supply — Cartons designed to be opened repeatedly and stored on a shelf.
- Distributor cases — Plain or lightly printed cartons intended to be over-labelled downstream.
Dimensions and structural sizing
Internal dimensions grow faster than the vial does, because the insert wall thickness increases along with the cavity depth.
- Single 10ml vial — Commonly around 34 × 34 × 62 mm internal with a die-cut platform, more with foam.
- Two vials — Commonly around 62 × 34 × 62 mm internal.
- Five vials, single row — Commonly around 145 × 34 × 62 mm internal — long, and best avoided unless it ships inside a case.
- Ten vials, two rows of five — Commonly around 145 × 68 × 62 mm internal, usually with partitions.
- Twelve vials, 4 × 3 tray — A squarer, stronger footprint that stacks better on a shelf.
Materials that hold up at 10ml
This is the one vial size where we regularly recommend moving away from a plain folding carton.
- Heavier SBS paperboard — Still the right primary carton for single and low-count packs, at a higher caliper than a 5ml equivalent.
- Rigid chipboard — For presentation sets and for any box that will be handled repeatedly.
- Corrugated board — The correct material once the pack is a case rather than a carton — E-flute for a printed retail case, B-flute for transit.
- Kraft paperboard — Suits the look of research and lab supply, though print contrast is limited.
- Recyclable paper-based stock — Available in all of the above; pair with paperboard partitions to keep the pack single-stream.

Insert depth and vial restraint
At 10ml the insert stops being a locator and becomes a shock absorber. Cavity depth is the single most important number.
- Full-depth EVA foam — A milled cavity supporting most of the vial body. The most protective option, and the one we recommend for individually posted packs.
- Twin-wall partitions — For multi-count boxes. Each vial sits in its own cell, and the cell walls also stiffen the carton.
- Deep-draw moulded tray — A formed pocket per vial, useful when the pack is displayed or when vials must stay upright during handling.
- Die-cut paperboard — Workable for a single vial inside an outer case, but we generally advise a doubled or laminated platform rather than a single layer.

Printing on a larger panel
A 10ml carton gives you the most printable area of any single-vial format, which changes what is worth doing.
- CMYK process — Full-colour artwork with room for photographic or scientific imagery.
- PMS spot colour — Keeps a brand colour consistent across a range of sizes.
- One-colour printing — Common on research and distributor cartons where information matters more than styling.
- Inside printing — Space for handling notes or reconstitution guidance that you author and approve.
Finishing on heavier packs
- Matte lamination — Also adds a small amount of scuff resistance, which matters on a box that is handled repeatedly.
- Gloss lamination — Maximum colour impact; shows handling marks more readily.
- Soft-touch coating — A premium feel on rigid presentation boxes.
- Spot UV — Detail highlight over a matte base.
- Foil stamping — Works well on the larger panel area available at this size.
- Embossing and debossing — Best on rigid board rather than on a folding carton at this weight.
- Aqueous coating — A lighter alternative to laminate film where recyclability is the priority.
Structures suited to heavier contents
- Auto-lock bottom carton — A locking base that carries loaded weight far better than a tuck-in bottom flap.
- Two-piece lid and base — Rigid walls, no glued seam under load, and a strong opening feel.
- Sleeve and tray — The tray takes the weight while the sleeve carries the graphics.
- Rigid magnetic — For premium sets, though the added weight makes shipping costs worth checking.
- Corrugated shipper — The right structure once you are moving ten or more filled 10ml vials at once.
How to order
- 1. Vial sample — For 10ml we strongly prefer a physical sample, because cavity depth has to be right first time.
- 2. Transit profile — Tell us whether the box ships alone or inside a case — this drives the whole specification.
- 3. Structure, insert and quote — We propose a combination and price it against your quantity.
- 4. Die line, proof and sample — Artwork on our die line, digital proof, then a physical sample loaded with a real vial.
- 5. Production — Printed, cut, glued and packed, with heavier packs cased rather than banded.
Artwork guidance
- Use the extra panel area for a clear information hierarchy rather than filling it.
- Keep a clean, matte or uncoated zone if a label will be applied over the carton later.
- Check that the artwork still reads when the carton is stacked and only the front panel is visible.
- Files go out as print-ready PDF: 3 mm bleed, outlined fonts, 300 dpi imagery.
Quality control for heavier packs
- Cavity depth is measured against the approved sample, not just cavity diameter.
- Loaded cartons are checked for lid clearance so the cap is never compressed.
- Auto-lock bottoms are function-tested by erecting and loading sample cartons.
- Colour is checked against the signed proof or PMS reference through the run.
- Partition assemblies are checked for square, since a racked cell lets the vial lean.
Shipping and secondary packaging
Ten-count 10ml packs are heavy enough that the outer case needs to be specified deliberately rather than chosen from stock.
- Empty cartons ship flat; rigid and two-piece boxes ship assembled.
- Outer cases are specified to the load, not to the nearest stock size.
- Partitions and foam are supplied ready to load.
- We ship nationwide to business and residential addresses.
Where the filled packs will travel with coolant, plan the outer at the same time as the carton — insulated outer shipping boxes need internal space for gel packs that a standard mailer does not allow for.

10ml Peptide Vial Boxes: questions we are asked
Why does a 10ml box need a deeper insert than a 5ml box?
Because a filled 10ml vial carries considerably more momentum in a drop. A shallow cavity that grips only the shoulder concentrates that load on a small area of the insert, which is where tearing and vial escape start. Supporting the vial over more of its height spreads the load.
Should a ten-count 10ml box be a carton or a corrugated case?
If it is a retail or presentation unit, a heavy paperboard or rigid box with partitions. If its job is purely to move ten filled vials safely, a corrugated case with partitions will protect better for less money.
Can you match a 10ml carton to our existing 5ml design?
Yes. The die line will be new because the proportions change, but we can carry the same colours, typography and finishing across so the two sit together as a range.
What foam density do you use?
It depends on the vial weight and how the pack travels; a foam that is too soft lets a heavy vial settle over time, and one that is too firm makes the vial difficult to remove. We select it against your vial and confirm it on the physical sample.
Do 10ml boxes need an auto-lock bottom?
Not always, but it is the cheapest structural upgrade available and it is usually worth taking on any carton holding more than two filled 10ml vials.
Can vials be packed lying down instead of upright?
Structurally yes, and a horizontal layout can make a flatter, more postable pack. Whether your product should be stored or shipped on its side is a decision for you and your formulation team, not one we can advise on.
How much clearance is needed above the cap?
Enough that the lid or top flap never rests on the crimp seal, with a little more on packs that will be stacked. We set the exact figure against your vial and confirm it on the sample.
Will you do transit testing for us?
We produce samples so you can run your own transit testing, and we will adjust the specification based on what you find. We do not issue transit or temperature test certification.
Is a window practical on a 10ml carton?
Yes, and the larger panel makes it easier to balance a window against your printed content. Bear in mind that a window removes board, so on a heavy pack we may recommend repositioning it away from a load-bearing corner.
Do you supply 10ml vials?
No. We manufacture packaging only. Vials, closures, contents and any labelling decisions about them are yours.
