Humidity is the single most useful thing to design around for customers in Florida, and it affects labels long before it affects boxes. A paper label that performs adequately in a dry climate will wrinkle, discolour and lift in sustained damp.
The good news is that this is a solved problem: it is a materials decision, made once, at specification stage.
Labels come first
On a refrigerated vial in a humid environment, condensation forms the moment the vial leaves cold storage. That water sits directly against the label.
- Film facestock, not paper — BOPP or PET is genuinely waterproof. A coated paper label is not, whatever the coating.
- Overlaminate — Protects the printed surface from moisture and from wiping.
- Adhesive rated for damp application — Applying a label to a vial with condensation on it is a different problem from storing it damp.
- Edge lift is the symptom — If labels curl at the shoulder, the cause is usually facestock or curvature, not the printer.

What humidity does to cartons
- Board softens — Paperboard and corrugated both lose stiffness as they take up moisture.
- Compression strength drops — Which matters most for stacked cases, not for single cartons.
- Lid fit loosens — Friction lids on folding board slacken over months of humid storage.
- Laminate slows it — A laminated or aqueous-coated surface delays moisture uptake meaningfully.
- Storage matters more than transit — A short humid journey does little; six months in an unconditioned unit does a lot.

- Laminated or coated cartons — Where cartons are stored for extended periods before use.
- Rigid construction — Greyboard is more dimensionally stable than folding board in damp conditions.

Why do our vial labels keep lifting at the edges?
Usually one of two causes: a paper facestock absorbing moisture, or the label wrapping onto the shoulder curve where the edge cannot lie flat. Both are fixed at specification stage rather than at print stage.
Will condensation from gel packs damage the shipping box?
Untreated corrugated softens as it absorbs moisture and loses compression strength. A moisture barrier, a coated inner surface or a liner separating the coolant all address it.
Should we laminate cartons we store for a long time?
If storage is unconditioned and lasts months, it helps noticeably. It does complicate paper recycling, so an aqueous coating is a reasonable middle ground.
Can labels be applied to a vial that already has condensation on it?
Not reliably with a standard adhesive. Tell us the condition of the vial surface at the moment of application and we will specify an adhesive for it.
